J. R. JONES Early December 1987, due to a death in the family, I had to postpone a procedure to remove prostate stones. This was rescheduled three weeks later, at the end of the month. During the procedure, the surgeon discovered cancer in my left kidney. January 1988, surgeons removed the cancerous kidney. They told me, had I been able to keep my original appointment the cancer would have been undetectable, and gone untreated, significantly decreasing my survival rate. |

MITCH NAUGHER About 25 years ago I had a doctor's appointment. My wife told me to have the doctor look at a place on my ear and nose. I did and the next thing I knew he had me on the table cutting on me. He called later and said the biopsy was malignant. I went to a dermatologist the next time there was a spot that did not go away. Most of the time the spots are precancerous. However, I have had Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma skin cancer. I see my dermatologist regularly. I thank the lord for modern medicine and new knowledge for treating and preventing cancer. My father was a farmer, and had to have an ear removed partly because he didn't go regularly to the doctor. |

JONETTE HENDERSON August 23, 2000 I was told I had leukemia and needed a bone marrow biopsy to confirm the type of leukemia. My biopsy confirmed that I had AML, acute myelogenous leukemia. My type of leukemia spreads rapidly and affects the white blood cells and platelets. It was a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. At 58 years old, I was too old for a bone marrow transplant due to host/donor disease, so chemotherapy was my only option. My symptoms mimicked the flu and were very progressive. I had only had the disease for maybe three weeks. After eight months of chemo, mostly 24/7, in-patient and with many complications, my treatment plan was stopped. But, my wonderful oncologist, Dr. N. Gupta, told me that if I remained in remission for two years he thought I would be “home free.” Although “cure” is not used with many cancers, I felt so blessed by my faith, family and friends throughout my treatment that I have to believe I am cured and paying it forward. |
